After a seven-year hiatus, the groundbreaking Waldorf Project returns with its most ambitious work to date: Chapter Five/KAIHOGYO — a fully interactive experience designed to induce an elevated state of consciousness, without the use of drugs.

This is fully immersive physical theatre in which participants' responses become an intrinsic part of the experience.

From 19 November, 40 participants each night will be guided through a custom-built interactive environment at a secret north London location. Over the course of the three-and-a-half-hour journey, they will encounter a series of physical experiences, culminating in a powerful finale designed to induce a transcendental 'flow state'.

Waldorf Project founder Sean Rogg said: "I've spent the last seven years researching how to access transcendental states of consciousness without the use of mind-altering drugs. Our latest chapter, KAIHOGYO, is inspired by the pilgrimage of the Tendai Buddhist monks of Mount Hiei in Japan, who undertake a 1,000-day walking practice in pursuit of enlightenment. I can't promise enlightenment but I've distilled elements of their journey into an experience that uses meditation through movement to guide participants towards an elevated state of consciousness."

He added: “As the experience reaches its climax, we aim to guide participants towards what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi described as a ‘flow state' — a deep psychological state of complete immersion, energised focus and effortless engagement in an activity. Often described as being ‘in the zone',it is characterised by a diminished awareness of self and an altered perception of time.”

KAIHOGYO

Inspired by one of the world's most extraordinary human endurance practices

A vast custom-built labyrinth has been created at a secret location in Islington, north London, inspired by the Tendai Buddhist monks' 1,000-day pilgrimage.

Participants are led through the maze by a team of dancers who serve as guides and teachers through a sequence of disorientating environments. Remaining alongside the group throughout the journey, these dancers provoke emotional and physical responses while ensuring participants' safety at every stage.

This moving meditation lies at the heart of the Waldorf Project and is designed to generate intense empathy between strangers before building towards a climactic finale in which the whole group becomes a single synchronised organism.

THE RULES

No talking. No phones. No jewellery. No watches. No perfume.

To fully enter the experience, participants are asked to observe a few simple rules: No talking. No phones. No jewellery. No watches. No perfume.

Please bring as few personal possessions as possible. At the beginning of the experience, participants will change out of their own clothing and into their Waldorf Project uniform within communal theatrical changing areas.

This performance is an intense physical and sensory experience and is not suitable for everyone. Participants should not attend if they experience nyctophobia (fear of the dark), aphenphosmphobia (fear of being touched), claustrophobia, asthma or light-sensitive epilepsy. Pregnant people cannot participate, and due to the physical nature of the experience and the design of the environment, we are unable to accommodate participants wearing casts, using wheelchairs, walking sticks or other mobility equipment.

Sean Rogg said: "This is arguably the most intense immersive theatre experience in the world and it's not for the faint-hearted. It will push the participants to the edge of their comfort zones, challenging them physically, mentally and emotionally."

THE HISTORY

The Waldorf Project is an immersive art experience founded and led by Sean Rogg since 2012.

Chapter One/MUSKMELON (2012) created a fine dining restaurant within a curated art space environment, where dancers interacted directly with diners. USA Today named it one of the top ten experimental restaurant experiences in the world.

Chapter Two/COLOUR (2015) was a deeply immersive, multi-sensory psychological journey through monochromatic environments designed to explore the relationship between emotion and perception through light, sound, scent, and movement. Critics highlighted audience responses ranging from profound emotional resonance and tears to moments of vulnerability, discomfort and awe.

Chapter Three/FUTURO (2016) was structured as a deliberately dystopian three-hour experience designed to strip away the pressures, anxieties and ego of the outside world. Participants were subjected to sensory extremes — moving through pitch darkness, experiencing involuntary physical interactions with performers, whilst being entirely disoriented. Participants were invited to confront their perceptions and move towards a heightened sense of connection. The intention was to provoke a euphoric state where guests would connect with themselves, the performers, and each other.

Chapter 4/BARZAKH (2019) was staged in the colossal, cavernous Shredded Wheat Factory in Welwyn Garden City. The title, Barzakh, is derived from an Islamic philosophical concept meaning "purgatory" or a state of limbo between the earthly world and the hereafter. Participants moved through a sequence of intense sensory environments, including cult ritualistic encounters, being washed, cleansed and enticed into group physical interaction, and finally immersed in powerful strobe lighting at specific frequencies which induced psychedelic experiences. The intense journey lasted four hours and the transformative, soul-cleansing passage intended to evoke the feeling of being in the presence of a higher power. The experience sought to create a sense of transcendence and connection.
