Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced the cast for the upcoming film adaptation of Octet, the acclaimed musical by Dave Malloy, and will also take the director’s chair for the project.
The cast features an impressive line-up: Amanda Seyfried (Jessica), Rachel Zegler (Velma), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Paula), Phillipa Soo (Karly), Gaten Matarazzo (Toby), Jonathan Groff (Henry), Tramell Tillman (Marvin), and Paul-Jordan Jansen (Ed).
Octet centres on eight individuals grappling with their relationship to the digital world. Gathering in a church basement, they commit to disconnecting by placing their phones in a box. Through rich vocal arrangements alone—without instruments—the show explores addiction, human connection, and the challenge of being truly present. Known for its clever writing, intricate harmonies, and powerful solo moments, the piece offers a deeply human look at life in the age of constant connectivity. Malloy is also known for Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.
The musical first premiered Off-Broadway on 19 May 2019 at the Signature Theatre in New York. Due to strong demand, its run was extended multiple times before closing on 30 June. The original production was directed and choreographed by Annie Tippe, with music direction by Or Matias, set design by Amy Rubin and Brittany Vasta, costumes by Brenda Abbandandolo, lighting by Christopher Bowser, sound by Hidenori Nakajo, and production stage management by Jhanaë Bonnick.
