Boris Johnson gave a press briefing today, introducing a fourth tier of coronavirus restrictions in London and south-east England from tomorrow with a tightening of the plans to relax the rules around households gathering during the Christmas period. The decision amid rising fears about a 'highly contagious' mutant form of coronavirus and increasing infections.

People should not to travel into a tier four area, though support bubbles remain unaffected as do the exemptions for separated parents and their children.

Across the rest of the country, rules allowing up to three households to meet will now be limited to Christmas Day only.

Until today, shops, hairdressers, gyms and schools were open.

Theatres have been closed since Tuesday 15th December.
