Boris Johnson will today make a statement on the next steps in a bid to halt a second wave of Covid, after chief medical officers explained the decision to raise Covid alert level.
Pubs, bars and restaurants in England will be forced to close at 10 pm every night from Thursday, but other measures could be announced: a ban on different households mixing together, or a circuit breaker lockdown could (a shorter two-week national lockdown). The measures are designed by Mr Johnson to avoid a full lockdown, although Health Secretary Matt Hancock refused to rule out "national action" when pressed over the possibility of a second national lockdown.
