Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo is a bright and energetic look into a world filled with insects, offering a massive spectacle that focuses on incredible physical skill and vibrant production design.
Under the guidance of Artistic Guide Gilles Ste-Croix and Creation Director Chantal Tremblay, the show transforms the stage into a bustling ecosystem that feels both alien and familiar. The level of acrobatics is spectacular, pushing the limits of what seems possible for the human body and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the performance. Writer, Director, and Choreographer Deborah Colker has crafted a series of movements that mirror the frantic energy of nature, ensuring the pace remains brisk and engaging. One of the most impressive parts of the evening involves performers using trampolines to run up a huge vertical wall, jumping and flipping with perfect timing and grace against a backdrop designed by Set and Props Designer Gringo Cardia. Another standout moment features performers dressed as ants who juggle large pieces of fruit using only their feet, which is both mesmerising and highly skilful.

Alongside these high-energy acts, there is a funny and charming love story that plays out between a quirky blue fly and a ladybug. This part of the show adds a lot of heart and provides plenty of laughs, making sure the performance feels like more than just a series of tricks.
The costumes by Liz Vandal are detailed and imaginative, making every performer look like a colourful creature found in a garden through the use of intricate textures and vivid patterns. The music and lighting also play a big part in making the experience feel special, keeping the energy high from start to finish. However, for those who are not particularly into the circus, it is worth noting that this production stays very true to its roots. While it is big, bold, and visually stunning, it is, at its heart, a pure circus show that celebrates amazing talent and visual wonder above all else.
Ovo is a great choice for anyone who wants to see a high-quality show filled with joy and excitement. Even though it is clearly a circus through and through, the sheer talent on display makes it a memorable night out at the theatre that is sure to impress audiences of all ages with its technical brilliance and fun spirit. The show remains a feast for the eyes and a testament to what people can achieve with years of practice and dedication.
It runs until 1 March. Tickets: here.
