What a phenomenal year for London theatre. 2025 has truly had it all—spectacular West End revivals, heart-stopping new dramas, and musical transfers that took the city by storm. The stages were brighter, the talent was bolder, and audiences were treated to a vintage year of performances.
Narrowing it down was near impossible, but looking back at the productions that generated the most buzz, critical acclaim, and unforgettable moments, we have found our top five.
Here are the shows that, for us, defined 2025.
1. Paddington: The Musical - The Savoy Theatre
Was there a drier eye in the house when this opened? We doubt it. Paddington: The Musical took the beloved bear from darkest Peru and placed him firmly into the heart of the West End. This is not just a children's show; it is a masterclass in theatrical magic. With ingenious puppetry that brings Paddington to life with astounding emotion, and a score that is as warm and comforting as a marmalade sandwich, this production is pure, unadulterated joy. It is the feel-good hit the city needed this year.
2. Evita - The London Palladium
Some shows demand a venue as grand as the material, and in 2025, Evita found its perfect home at the Palladium. This was Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's classic staged on an epic scale. The production was a visually stunning, sweeping historical epic that leaned into the vastness of the Palladium stage, thanks to Jamie Lloyd's direction and Fabian Aloise's choreography. The defining image of the year was undoubtedly the balcony scene. The rendition of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" became a cultural phenomenon, attracting thousands of people to the theatre just to witness it. The hush that fell over the massive crowd was electric—a spine-tingling reminder of the sheer, unifying power of live theatre.
3. Daniel's Husband - Marylebone Theatre
Amidst a year of massive musicals, this intimate drama at the Marylebone Theatre delivered the biggest emotional punch of 2025. Michael McKeever's play about a perfect gay couple divided by their views on marriage is a slow-burn that erupts into a devastating second act. It was a production fiercely acted and beautifully directed, leaving audiences in stunned, tearful silence night after night. A vital, challenging, and deeply human piece of theatre that stayed with you long after you left the auditorium.
4. Burlesque -The Savoy Theatre
If Daniel's Husband was the year's quiet devastation, Burlesque was its loudest party. Taking over the Savoy (a banner year for this theatre!), this adaptation of the hit movie was an explosion of glitter, glamour, and vocal acrobatics. It didn't just transfer from screen to stage; it was elevated. With high-octane choreography and a slick, sexy aesthetic, it was pure spectacle designed to entertain. It was the night out of the year—a dazzling adrenaline shot of showbiz glitter.
5. Shucked - Regent's Park Open Air Theatre
Who knew a musical about corn could be this good? Shucked was the surprise comedy juggernaut of the summer. Transferring from Broadway to the unique setting of Regent's Park, this show was a hilarious, pun-filled antidote to taking life too seriously. With an infectious country-pop score and a script stuffed with jokes, seeing it under the stars on a warm evening was perfection. It was silly, sweet, and exactly the kind of summer fun London craved.
