If you are looking for a venue that captures the warmth and nostalgia of classic British entertainment, Brick Lane Music Hall is the place to be. Hosted by the legendary Vincent Hayes MBE—who was recognised in 2013 for his services to British Music Hall—The Magic of Christmas is a production that truly celebrates the spirit of the season. It is remarkable to think of Hayes’ journey, taking this art form from the back room of a Bethnal Green pub to running the only permanent venue in the UK dedicated to year-round British music hall entertainment. That history is full of heart and humour, and you feel that passion the moment the show begins.

The atmosphere in the room is simply fantastic; it feels less like a standard theatre trip and more like a joyful, sociable experience where everybody seems happy and cheering along. It is a good old-style Christmas cabaret with a cracking selection of jokes and a wonderful array of songs that has the whole room engaged. However, be prepared that the night is quite long—we sit down at around 6 pm and do not leave until 22:45. While the entertainment is generally very good, some parts could be shortened to keep the energy up, specifically the selection of songs from movies which feels like it drags on a bit too long.
The experience includes a three-course Christmas meal, and this is where things fall a little short. While the show is a feast, the dinner is not great. The starter is a Tomato and Pepper soup, and there is no alternative available if you don’t eat peppers. Additionally, the portion size for the main course is not great.
But if you can look past the culinary stumbles and the marathon runtime, the sheer infectious energy of the performance makes this a worthy festive treat.
