Stepping into the Trafalgar Theatre is like taking a joyful leap back to the mid-90s with Clueless the Musical. Based on the iconic film, this stage adaptation, with a book by the original writer-director Amy Heckerling, tells the story of the popular and well-meaning Beverly Hills High student Cher Horowitz, who takes on the project of transforming her awkward new friend, Tai, into someone popular and datable. While playing matchmaker for Tai, Cher also navigates her own romantic interests and eventually realizes her feelings for her former stepbrother, Josh.
The heart of any Clueless adaptation lies with its Cher Horowitz, and Emma Flynn absolutely nails it. She embodies Cher's ditzy charm and underlying good intentions with impressive vocal prowess and comedic timing. Flynn's stage presence is captivating, making her the undeniable anchor of the show. Alongside her, Keelan McAuley provides a grounded and likeable Josh, navigating the intellectual sparring and burgeoning romance with Cher convincingly. Their chemistry, particularly in the latter half of the show, is a highlight.

The "plastically fantastic" world of Beverly Hills High is brought to life with a set that is both inventive and instantly recognizable. Cher's rotating closet is a particular delight, eliciting gasps and cheers from the audience. The quick transitions between school hallways, shopping malls, and lavish parties contribute to the show's infectious energy, keeping the pace brisk and engaging. Director Rachel Kavanaugh and choreographer Lizzi Gee have clearly worked wonders on the stage of the Trafalgar, ensuring that the ensemble numbers are dynamic and full of life. The cast as a whole brings an infectious enthusiasm to the stage, making it impossible not to tap your foot along. Special mention should go to Chyna-Rose Frederick as the sassy and loyal Dionne, and Romona Lewis-Malley as the initially awkward but ultimately blossoming Tai, both delivering strong performances that capture the essence of their beloved characters.

The musical score, with music by KT Tunstall and lyrics by Glenn Slater, is a mix of original compositions and, perhaps surprisingly, lacks some of the memorable pop hits one might expect. While the songs effectively move the plot forward and allow the talented cast to showcase their vocal abilities, most are not memorable.
Despite the slight lack of enduring melodies, Clueless the Musical succeeds in capturing the spirit and humour of the original film. The sharp dialogue, lifted directly from the movie in many instances, lands perfectly, and the updated references keep the humour fresh for a modern audience. This production prioritizes fun and energy, and in that, it absolutely delivers. With its stellar cast, vibrant set, and an overall infectious enthusiasm, Clueless the Musical is a delightful trip down memory lane that is sure to please fans of the film and newcomers alike. It's a feel-good show that, while not musically ground-breaking, offers a thoroughly entertaining escape to the sunny, fashionable world of Beverly Hills.
It runs until 27 September. Tickets: here.
